5 Things you can Toss Today in your Main Living Space.

Our Clear the Clutter before the Holidays series continues with the main living space!

The holidays are just around the corner, bringing more gatherings, decorations, and activities into your home. Your living room, as the hub of entertainment, deserves a refresh before the festivities begin. Here are five things to declutter today, with expert advice to guide you. I promise this should take 30-60 minutes tops!

1. Old Magazines and Newspapers

Holiday guests don’t need to see last summer’s issues cluttering your coffee table. Recycle outdated publications and consider going digital to keep your space paper-free in the future. If you are keeping because there’s something inspiring inside, start a Pinterest page, and keep your mood-boards digital!

2. Worn-Out Throw Pillows and Blankets

Refresh your cozy factor with seasonal accents or neutral pieces in good condition. Let go of anything faded, torn, or that no longer complements your decor. (I’m not saying to toss your blanky from childhood, but maybe put it under your pillow in your bed).

3. Unused Electronics and Cords

Extra remotes, tangled cords, or outdated devices can detract from a polished look. Test and label what’s essential, and recycle or donate the rest to keep things streamlined for guests. I am the person that does keep a small bag of a few random cords, and that’s ok, but let’s dump the phone cords and video aux. Those are definitely dated!)

4. Decor That Doesn’t Reflect Your Holiday Style

Now’s the time to curate your decor. Donate or store items that don’t align with your current theme or the warm, festive atmosphere you’re creating. This is not your hall pass to go and buy a bunch of seasonal decor you will never use, but definitely invest in a couple of pieces that cozy up the space, while also reflecting how you want to feel when in your home.

5. Unnecessary Paperwork

Create a clean slate for the new year by sorting and scanning documents now. Shred sensitive information and tuck away only what’s essential. It’s always a good idea when doing this, to keep tax season in mind. I highly recommend to clients purchasing an accordion envelope file holder, labeling it by year, and using this to house all of your sensitive paperwork you will need come April.
